A coding agent for small, well-scoped fixes
Let an agent take on bug fixes and small changes in a sandboxed copy of your code, with a person reviewing every change.
Know what "good" means
Coding agents are commonly measured on SWE-bench, which tests whether a model can resolve real GitHub issues. Compare current models on the independent Artificial Analysis leaderboards before you choose.
How to set it up
Give the agent a branch, never your main branch, plus your test suite. Every change goes through review like any teammate's pull request.
For private code, a local coding model such as Qwen2.5-Coder (offered in sizes from 0.5B to 32B on Ollama) can handle smaller tasks on your own hardware.
Watch out for
Agents can confidently ship wrong code. Require passing tests, keep changes small, and don't give an agent production credentials.
