Local vs cloud coding agents: Aider, Cline, OpenCode vs Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot

✓ Last verified October 15, 2026

Pricing and features come from official pages. Local models usually trail the best cloud models; check SWE-bench Verified and the model picker before committing. See the benchmarks we trust.

Local: Aider, Cline and OpenCode are free, open-source agents that can run against a model on your own machine (e.g. Qwen coder models via Ollama), so code never leaves it. You trade some capability and need decent hardware. Cloud: Claude Code, Codex and GitHub Copilot use the strongest hosted models with predictable subscriptions, but your code context is sent to the provider.
